Sump

When water rises, call MAX.

A sump pump is the last line of defense between groundwater and your basement or crawl space. The catch is that the heavy storm most likely to overwhelm a failing pump is the same storm most likely to knock the power out, which is exactly why a battery backup is not an upsell, it is the part that makes the system reliable when it counts.

We install and replace primary sump pumps, add battery backup systems that keep pumping through an outage or a primary-pump failure, and swap out the loud slamming check valves that make an otherwise fine system unbearable to live above.

Sump pumps move groundwater only. If you have a basement bathroom or laundry below the sewer line, that is a sewage ejector system, not a sump pump. See our sewer pump page for ejector and grinder pump work.

If your existing pump runs constantly, makes new noises, or you cannot remember the last time it was tested, that is worth a look before the next major rain rather than during it.

FAQ

Sump Pumps & Battery Backup FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask us most about this service.

How long does a sump pump last?

Roughly 7 to 10 years for most units, though a pump in a pit that cycles constantly will wear out sooner. Age alone is reason enough to test it.

Do I really need a battery backup?

If a wet basement would cause real damage, yes. Severe storms drive both the highest water volume and the highest chance of an outage, and the primary pump is useless without power.

How do I test my sump pump?

Pour several gallons of water into the pit and confirm the float rises, the pump starts, the pit empties, and the pump shuts off cleanly. Do that before storm season, not during it.

Why is my sump pump running all the time?

Usually a stuck float, a failed check valve letting discharged water fall back into the pit, an undersized pump, or a genuinely high water table. The first two are quick fixes.

Is a sewer pump the same as a sump pump?

No. Sump pumps move groundwater out of a pit to prevent flooding. Sewage ejector pumps lift waste from basement fixtures below the sewer line. If that is your situation, see our sewer pump service page.
