Hybrid

Efficiency without the guesswork.

A hybrid heat-pump water heater pulls heat from the surrounding air instead of generating all of it electrically, which can cut water-heating energy use dramatically compared with a standard electric tank. On a Rheem ProTerra, that can reach up to a 4.07 UEF and meaningful annual savings versus conventional electric.

They are not right for every home, and we will tell you when yours is not a fit. A heat pump needs adequate air volume around it, a location that tolerates cooler and drier exhaust air, a condensate drain or pump, and the electrical service to support it. Installed in a cramped closet with no air, it will run on backup elements and you will have paid for efficiency you never receive.

Where the conditions do fit, a garage, basement, or utility space with room to breathe, it is one of the strongest efficiency upgrades available for a home on electric water heating.

FAQ

Hybrid Heat-Pump Water Heaters FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask us most about this service.

How much can a hybrid heat-pump water heater save?

Manufacturer figures for the Rheem ProTerra reach up to about 55% savings per year versus a standard electric tank. Actual savings depend on your usage, local electric rates, and where the unit is installed.

Are they noisy?

They run a compressor and a fan, so they are audible, comparable to a dehumidifier or window unit. That is a non-issue in a garage or basement and can be a real one directly beside a bedroom wall.

Do they cool the room they are in?

Yes. They pull heat out of the surrounding air, which cools and dehumidifies that space. In a garage or basement that is usually neutral or a benefit; in conditioned living space it works against your heating in winter.

Will it work in a small closet?

Usually not well. Manufacturers specify a minimum air volume, and in a tight closet the unit falls back on resistance elements, which means you paid for a heat pump and are running an ordinary electric heater. We check the space before recommending one.
