A sewer pump, also called a sewage ejector or grinder pump, lifts wastewater from fixtures that sit below the main sewer line. Basement bathrooms, laundry sinks, and bar sinks in walk-out basements all depend on a pump in a sealed basin to push waste up to the house drain.
That is different from a sump pump, which only moves groundwater out of a pit to keep a basement or crawl space dry. Sump pumps handle clear water. Sewer pumps handle sewage, which means a sealed basin, a check valve, a vent, and discharge piping routed to the building drain.

Is a sewer pump the same as a sump pump?
No. A sump pump removes groundwater from a pit to prevent flooding. A sewer pump lifts sewage from a sealed basin when fixtures are below the sewer line. They look similar but serve completely different jobs.
Why does my ejector pump bang every time it shuts off?
Usually a worn or stuck check valve letting discharged waste fall back into the pit, which forces the pump to restart hard. Replacing the check valve often fixes the noise without replacing the pump.
How long does a sewage ejector pump last?
Most residential ejector pumps last roughly 7 to 10 years depending on use and what goes down the drain. Grinder pumps on pressurized mains may need service sooner if solids load is high.
Can you add a bathroom in my basement?
If the bathroom is below the sewer line, an ejector system with a sealed basin is part of the scope. We handle the pump, basin, discharge, and vent connections as part of the plumbing rough-in.
